There are many reasons why teeth become stained or discolored, including tobacco use, and drinking dark liquids such as red wine, coffee, tea and cola. However, the natural aging process and prescription medication use can also cause yellowing and graying.

Fortunately, in most cases Melbourne MD can remove all your stains and bring your teeth back to their natural whiteness.

Many people are opting for the Zoom!® Chair side Whitening System (Zoom!®) for fast, safe and effective teeth whitening. Zoom!® combines the newest advances in dental technology with proven chemical formulas. This ensures our team can provide whitening results that will satisfy even the toughest of cases.

As with any whitening system, the post-treatment results can vary according to the degree of staining and the condition of the teeth, Melbourne MD provides you with home trays to ensure optimal results will be achieved.

About The Procedure

The staff at Melbourne MD can explain the procedure in great detail even though the treatment is very simple:

  1. The Dentist/Dental Hygienist will examine and polish your teeth.
  2. The gums are then protected with isolation material.
  3. A whitening gel is applied to the teeth.
  4. The gel is activated by the whitening machine for approximately 8 minutes. The cycle is then repeated 3-4 times within the session (depending on the severity of the staining).

Teeth Sensitivity

20% of people will experience some sensitivity during the procedure. Reasons for sensitivity are:

  1. Fine cracks in the teeth.
  2. Grinding.
  3. Toothbrush abrasion (enamel wear).

The sensitivity can last up to 24 hours after treatment. Sensitivity varies from patient to patient depending on the condition of the teeth. Most people only have mild sensitivity for a maximum of 10 hours. We recommend a product called Tooth Mousse or Relief Gel after the whitening to reduce sensitivity.

Whitening Treatment Cost

If you have private health insurance, you may be eligible for a refund of up to $350 (more with some insurances), depending on your level of cover. For your convenience, all of the Melbourne MD rooms have a Hicaps facility, which minimizes the out of pocket expense on the day of the procedure. The item numbers used to describe treatment are as follows: 015x1, 111x1, 119x2, 926x2, 118 (x2-16). Some insurances will pay on some items and not others, whilst some will pay on the item a few times on the same claim.

Whitening Results

The results are permanent. Over time, you will generate new staining and this will depend on your lifestyle. We recognise that all people will eventually get new stains, which is why we provide you with a home maintenance kit so you can maintain the brightness of your smile for life.

Yes of course, but is only suggested for rare cases where the natural lower teeth are replaced with crowns or a denture and these are whiter than the upper teeth. It is as simple as using the provided kit twice a year to maintain the original result.
